The 2021 White Lion of Mortimer 1 oz Platinum Coin forms the eighth release in The Royal Mint’s acclaimed Queen’s Beasts series. This collection honours the ten heraldic figures that guarded Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1953. First sculpted by James Woodford RA, each beast represents a historic strand of royal ancestry. Struck in 999.5 fine platinum, this coin contains one troy ounce of precious metal and qualifies as legal tender in the United Kingdom, which means it is free from Capital Gains Tax. These features make it an appealing choice for both collectors and investors.
 
The White Lion of Mortimer is a historic emblem inherited by Queen Elizabeth II from Edward IV of the House of York. It was a personal favourite of King George VI in the period before his coronation. Unlike many heraldic lions, the Mortimer Lion does not wear a crown. It sits rather than stands and is traditionally shown with a blue tongue. The lion clutches a shield that carries the Yorkist white rose en soleil, a white rose set before a radiant golden sun, presented on a striking two toned field.
 
Both sides of the coin have been designed by Jody Clark, one of the Royal Mint’s most respected engravers. The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse presents the Mortimer Lion with exceptional detail and depth, capturing its symbolic strength and royal heritage.
