The 2017 Griffin of Edward III is the second release in The Royal Mint’s renowned Queen’s Beasts series. This collection honours the ten heraldic figures that lined the entrance to Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, each one representing a distinct part of her royal heritage. The Griffin of Edward III symbolises courage, loyalty, and unwavering guardianship.
 
The griffin is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Throughout history it has been associated with nobility, vigilance, and the protection of treasure. Its combination of two powerful animals reflects dominion over both land and sky and reinforces its longstanding role as a guardian of truth and strength.
 
The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, accompanied by the traditional inscription that confirms the coin’s legal tender status.
The reverse, also designed by Jody Clark, shows the Griffin of Edward III gripping a shield decorated with the Round Tower of Windsor. The surrounding legend identifies the coin’s purity, weight, and year of issue.
