The 2016 Lion of England marks the inaugural release in The Royal Mint’s highly regarded Queen’s Beasts series, first issued in March 2016. The collection draws inspiration from the ten heraldic statues that stood guard at the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating the powerful symbols of royal lineage that have shaped British history for centuries.
 
Leading the series is the Lion of England, one of the oldest and most recognisable emblems of the British monarchy. Long associated with strength, courage, and authority, the lion has appeared on royal coats of arms, flags, and seals for generations. Its position as the opening coin sets the tone for the grandeur, heritage, and craftsmanship that define the Queen’s Beasts series.
 
The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS,” with the Latin abbreviations translating to “By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.”
The reverse, also designed by Jody Clark, depicts the Lion of England in a bold, stylised stance, holding a shield bearing the Royal Arms. The surrounding legend reads: “LION OF ENGLAND • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2016.”
